REVIEW: The Hallmark Sequel "Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up" Is as Silly as the First One

Missing Ornament--We've All Been There

Try as you might to pack away your Christmas decorations in an organized fashion each year, it never fails that something falls off the radar.  

Where is that stocking?  You've scoured all the boxes--where's the tree skirt?  

In Hallmark movies, the missing decoration always turns up eventually. In past movies, star and angel tree toppers have been misplaced, but the lost ornament in question in this movie is the pair of turtle doves, hence the title, Two Turtle Doves.


Legend has it that two turtle doves make people fall in love.  I wonder what power the eight maids a milking ornament has?  The power to make everyone hungry for cookies?

Sharon Harper's (Nikki DeLoach) great-grandfather from seven generations ago crafted an ornament for each of the twelve days of Christmas.  These timeless ornaments and priceless family heirlooms have graced the mantle of each succeeding generation.

When I was a little girl, my grandma crocheted around several shiny Christmas ornaments and put them in my hope chest.  I can still picture her sitting in her rocker, patiently weaving the thin thread around each delicate bulb.  Every Christmas season, happy, nostalgic tears sting my eyes as I hang them safely in the innermost part of the tree where I can see them, but where they will still be protected from flying Nerf darts and other mayhem that erupts with children.  If any of them broke, I would be heart-sick!  They can't be replaced.


Christmas Traditions Galore

Grandma Vera has passed away, and before Sharon makes a decision whether to sell or keep the house, Vera first asks her to complete a dozen family traditions from the copious journals she leaves behind.

Who has stacks of books filled with family traditions? We all have our traditions, but if volumes could be filled with holiday tasks to complete, most of us would be overwhelmed!  Alas, in a Hallmark movie, the idea still works.

Most Annoying Movie Moment

Sharon's cousin, Lucy, is pregnant with her first child.  Even if we overlook the fact that Lucy looks too old to be having a baby, her perpetual exaggerated waddle with hand on belly is just gross.

Pregnant women do not need to waddle.  I refused to waddle during that season of life, so it CAN be avoided.

Saddest Movie Scene

Sam Taylor (Michael Rady) is brave every Christmas so his daughter, Mikayla, can enjoy the magic of Christmas without seeing him grieve the loss of his wife and her mother.  He learns that Mikayla actually feels sad but tries not to show it for his sake.  She asks him, "Will Christmas always feel this way?"


This leads to an open and honest conversation where they both try to find the strength to heal, but did you know this scene was actually based on a real-life tragedy of the movie's writer?  Click here to read the true account the writer used for inspiration.

All Because Two People Fell in Love

Sharon's great-grandfather who made the ornament collection did so because he loved her great grandma but was too poor to offer her much.  Yet, their love story created quite a legacy.

Barbara Niven is stellar in her role of Gale Storm--the woman who, for 24 years, has been selling merchandise every holiday season on HSC (Holiday Shopping Channel). Ms. Christmas oozes more sweetness than a hot chocolate bomb, even when she receives bad news about her declining health.
